In this module, we hope to gather all of the thoughts and theories from the previous modules and link them to some ideas that may be new to you regarding children’s development. Just as children construct new ideas about how the world works through experiences and link these to what they already know, we adults take new ideas, mix them with what we know, and come up with our own ideas. In this module, we will explore the important ways in which children construct new knowledge and how we as early childhood educators can enrich and extend their learning.
You already know a lot about children. You care for them on a daily basis. You have been a child yourself and perhaps have strong memories of childhood play. You may be a parent raising your own children. If you have worked in any of the previous modules, you have already heard and read about child development theory and the role quality relationships play in a child’s development.
Sometimes when we are learning new ideas in bits and pieces, we forget to look up and see how they fit into the whole picture. In this module you will be able to gather these pieces of information you have been learning and construct a whole picture for yourself. This will help you to form your own philosophy about how children grow and learn and what your role will be in this process.
